The tyre brand Gislaved used to be produced outside Jönköping in Sweden. Today, Gislaved tyres is a brand that is owned by the great German tyre manufacturer Continental. The company was
founded back in 1893 by two brothers named Gislow. They started a production facility to manufacture boots and a new type of overshoe.
Gislaved tyres were bought by KF in 1927, KF continued developing the brand, gradually starting to manufacture tyres for cars, and by the seventies were they building Scandinavia's largest tyre factory. The company's strength was in producing good winter tyres ideal for Nordic conditions, and even today Gislaved tyres have a large market share of all tyres sold primarily in central Sweden. The company was the first tyre company to launch a winter tyre without high aromatic oils in the rubber mixture.
The Aston Martin driven by James Bond when he is in Iceland is equipped with Gislaved tyres because the film producers heard that these tyres were especially well designed for Nordic
conditions.
Even today it is a fact that the Nordic winter tyres are made with other rubber compounds with different specifications than their European counterparts. This may be one reason that the Gislaved
trademark has been able to remain as long even though they have not had as large a market share compared with other Nordic winter tyres in Scandinavia.
